McAfee Corp visit

McAfee Corp visit

Originally uploaded by feinbaum.

On our last day in Bangalore, we visited both McAfee and Hewitt. McAfee is the anti-virus software company and Hewitt is a Human Resource outsourcing firm.

McAfee has about 700 employees in the Bangalore office with all of them on the same floor. They shared with us that compensation hikes are far higher than in the US and Europe. Because of the competitive nature of retaining employees, they typically give between 15% – 18% annual salary increases for the Bangalore staff. Of course, don’t forget a typical Bangalore IT employee is only making about $15,000 US dollars per year, so they still have a great competitive edge on costs to develop products

Ron can you pick me up a high-end Dell laptop at the Indian price? Glad to see you are doing well. For god’s sake, you can’t afford to lose any weight. Just so you know, since our kitchen, dining room, downstairs bathroom, and living room are currently being remodeled, we too are living under a tent.

I would be interested, Ron, to know what type of Human Resources outsourcing work that the company performs in India. I bet you it is more payroll or other ministerial type duties. As an employment lawyer I can’t imagine that the business of coaching and counseling, disciplining, etc. can be handled by anyone other than on-site Human Resources personnel at the US based company. Can you imagine defending a discharge at trial or at arbitration and question is asked by the employee’s counsel, “So who was the decision maker in my client’s termination.” Answer: “Raj from Bangalore.” Such would be too impersonal. But nothing would cease to amaze me. In Detroit, Ford Motor Company is letting go thousands of employees to streamline costs, as well as General Motors.
